Fashion Face Off: Battle of the 1930s Bombshells

I’ve always been a sucker for the silky, slinky evening gowns of the 1930s. So for this Fashion Face Off, I thought it would be great to showcase some lovely satin 1930s-style gowns. Cecilia from Atonement, Pamela from Dancing on the Edge, and Anne from Glorious 39 all don shining examples of this stunning type of gown. I thought I’d also provide some vintage examples for reference:

Fashion ‘From Hell’

When it comes to Johnny Depp movies, From Hell is definitely my favorite one. It makes sense that my favorite Depp film would be a period drama (not that he hasn’t done a ton of those). But what really captures my interest with this film is it covers one of history’s most famous unsolved cases — one that has always particularly fascinated me: Jack the Ripper.

Period Drama Fashion Face Off

Greetings! I recently came up with a new feature I wanted to add to this blog that I’m hoping to make a weekly recurrence. I actually got the idea with the help of my sister (thanks, sis!). Basically, I’m going to try and do a “Who Wore It Better?” type post where I’ll showcase two costumes from two different period dramas that are somewhat similar to each other, whether in time period, color, and/or overall style. Sometimes the costumes will even be exactly the same. Period dramas have been known to recycle costumes after all. Then, I’ll ask you which person you think wore the look better.

I think this will be a fun and fast way to post a little more regularly while still doing my “bigger” fashion posts. I’m actually working on one as I type this, so stay tuned!

Another 90s trend is back! I did a previous blog post on choker necklaces, and now tweed is making a comeback. I have fond 90s memories of this trend. I remember owning a cute tweed blazer that tied together at the waist with a pretty pink ribbon. Of course, tweed was in long before the 90s, as its appearance in a number of period dramas proves. Keeping that in mind, I thought I’d showcase a few tweed appearances in period pieces, and then show you some similar clothing items, so you can get the look for yourself!

Capturing Cassandra’s 1930s Fashion

Greetings to all my period drama lovers and fashionistas! I realize I have sorely neglected my blog, and I can only hope you’ll forgive me! I have been suffering from a serious case of blogger’s block, but I think I’m all better now and can start posting a bit more frequently than once a month or once every two months.

The last period drama fashion post I did dealt with Rose’s whimsical style from I Capture the Castle. I now present you with Part II of that post where I’ll show you how to dress like a modern day Cassandra Mortmain.

Capturing 1930s Style

Hello all! I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a wonderful Turkey Day and is now gearing up for that magical holiday called Christmas. I realize I’ve been a bit lax in my blog posting as it’s been almost a month since my last post. Yikes! I apologize for the delay, but I’m back and here to inspire you with period drama fashion!

Since I started this blog, I’ve been wanting to do a fashion post on one of my favorite movies and books: I Capture the Castle. The first time I saw this delightful film, I was captured (pun intended) by the multifaceted characters and the whimsical plot. It manages to be both poignant and humorous. In fact, I love this movie so much, a screencap of it appears in the banner of my site. That’s a young Rose Byrne in the third square, playing, ironically, Rose Mortmain in the film.

Sunglasses Inspiration From Downton Abbey

The series finale of Downton Abbey is here! As I struggle to come to terms with the end of this magnificent show, I decided to do a period drama fashion post on an accessory essential: sunglasses. As in my other Downton Abbey posts, there are no plot spoilers here, just stylish pictures!

I’ve never really thought of sunglasses as a period drama fashion staple. I mean, unless it’s set in the 40’s onward, sunglasses don’t seem to make much of an appearance, which is why I was pleasantly surprised to see Lady Mary wearing some sleek shades in episode 7 of season 6. Sunglasses in the 20’s? Leave it to Lady Mary to be ahead of the fashion curve.

Going Crazy for Velvet and Lace

Halloween is nigh! Literally, it’s only one day away. If you’re like a lot of Halloween enthusiasts, you’re probably gearing up to watch some scary movies. That’s why I just had to recommend a period drama that’s perfect for Halloween: Stonehearst Asylum. It’s a thrilling trifecta of Gothic, romantic and creepy, and it also happens to be loosely based on an Edgar Allen Poe story entitled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.
